The debut One-Day International 'ODI' cricket match in the world was organized in Australia.

This match was played between England vs Australia on 05 January 1971.

In the third Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia during England's tour of Australia from 31 December 1970 to 5 January 1971. Due to bad weather on all days of this test, instead of being abandoned the test, with the consent of the officials of both the teams, on the last day of the Test. The test was converted into a single innings match with 40 overs to play for each team. 

In this match, an over was of 8 balls and was played with the white dress and a red ball and was later recognized as limited over One Day International 'ODI'.

India played their first One Day International (ODI) on 13 July 1974 under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar during India's tour of England at Headingley, Leeds, which was a 55-over ODI match.

The first-ever One-Day International World Cup tournament was held in the year 1975 and since then many ODI World Cup Championships have been organized.

  • Of all the ODI World Cups held so far, two ODI World Cups were sponsored by cigarette companies out of which the 1992 Benson Hedges World Cup was sponsored by Benson Hedges which was jointly organized in Australia and New Zealand, and the 1996 Wills World Cup was sponsored by Wills which was jointly organized in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

    • The 1987 Reliance World Cup was sponsored by a Communication company and was jointly organized in India and Pakistan from 08 October to 08 November.
